You are adrift in the Sargasso Nebula, no idea how many have gone before you. With limited food, fuel and ammunition you will need to move from one derelict hulk to another, looking for the supplies needed to repair the Void Ark and escape to safety. It’s not going to be easy, you will have to face monstrous creatures, robotic killing machines and the ever present vacuum of space. Welcome to Void Bastards, the upcoming strategy-shooter from Blue Manchu Games.
Void Bastards is in a genre all of its own, with equal parts strategy, rogue-like and shooter. It has a fantastic comic book art style, a serious sense of humor, awesome sounds effects and great game play. You play as one of an endless supply of prisoners sent out into the Sargasso Nebula to find the supplies needed to repair your prison ship. You will choose the route you take and which ships to search, all while balancing fuel, food and ammunition levels. Ships will have varying levels of resistance, the mutant crews come in all shapes and sizes or you may face environmental issues like radiation, smoke or power outages. Some ships will have modifiers to either help or hinder your progress and each will have different loot types in varying amounts depending on the type of ship.
Death and Re-Hydration?
You will die, a lot…There are many dangers in the vacuum of space. Ruthless Pirates scour the Nebula looking for salvage, Mutants and Security Droids want to kill you, Hermits want to steal from you and don’t even get me started on Space Whales. Luckily, The Void Ark is a prison ship, home to an ample supply of dehydrated registered offenders. Each new recruit is re-hydrated and set to the task of scouring the Nebula for salvage. You will get a new load out of random supplies, including Food, Fuel and Ammunition. Each prisoner also has a random perk, to help or hinder them in their mission This could be a bonus like having a chance to not consume food on use or having an incessant cough that alerts enemies to your position. On death, your shuttle S.T.E.V. will return to the arc to pick up your replacement, leaving your body and anything your are carrying behind. All is not lost though, your crafting progress and materials already on the Ark will be waiting for your replacement to use.
Materials and Crafting
On your travels across the Nebula, you will come across derelict space ships of many different shapes and sizes. Each will have different challenges for you to overcome and regardless of size, they will all have supplies for you to scavenge and bring back to the Ark. Use parts like Duct Tape, Nutri Trays and Spanners to cobble together new tools or upgrade existing ones, making it easier for you(or those after you) to work your way closer to escaping the Nebula. You will also collect junk, which can then be broken down and recycled into their base materials. These materials can then be used to craft parts you don’t have.
Load Up and Scavenge!
Once you have crafted everything you have parts for, It’s time to head out and look for more. You are able to take 3 items on each mission, a firearm, an indirect item and a device. Your load out is important as certain items effect enemies differently. Choose wisely, pick a Zapper if you are going to be facing robotic security forces, a Stapler if there are large mutant enemies and maybe a Pistol if there are going to be large numbers of smaller enemies.
Void Bastards is great! The fine folks at Blue Manchu Games have really hit one out of the park. I highly recommend that you check it out when it launches on Steam for PC and Xbox Game Pass on May 29th, 2019.
