Earlier this week, a report came out that a UK-based retailer had posted an interesting listing about Marvel’s Avengers. Base.com listed Spider-Man as a future DLC character and would be exclusive to PlayStation owners. Within the next 24 hours, Base.com had removed its listing and stated that it was “not correct”. Also, in that same 24 hours, Playstation and Crystal Dynamics confirmed the existence of the Spider-Man DLC character coming exclusively to Playstation in 2021.
So what’s actually going on with Spider-Man?
Last week, Crystal Dynamics revealed the first DLC Hero, Hawkeye, and eluded to the fact that even more heroes were on the way. In a press release via PlayStation, Crystal Dynamics Associate Art Director, Jeff Adams, shared his affinity for the Web-Slinger as well as some insights on the design decisions for Spider-Man. It was also shown that when Spider-Man is launched, an in-game event will celebrate his arrival with exclusive story missions as well
The announcement of a PlayStation Exclusive hero shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as it did. Given the nature of PlayStation’s exclusive marketing (which includes advanced beta access), Sony’s ownership of the Spider-Man movie IP, and the success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man on PS4, it’s actually an extremely smart business move on Sony’s part. What many are turned off by is the fact that when Sony began breaking down walls in regards to cross-play, this seems like another attempt to put up more borders, ultimately inconveniencing gamers and consumers alike.
Marvel’s Avengers will release September 4, 2020, on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While no date has been officially announced, Spider-Man is set to arrive in Marvel’s Avengers early in 2021 exclusively on the PlayStation platform.
