Skyrim Special Edition – How to Install Mods on Console

Skyrim

Skyrim launched over the weekend and it looks like everybody is playing it, including people returning to Skyrim and folks that are experiencing it for the first time. The new buzz word? Mods. Like with Fallout 4, mods have come to consoles in Skyrim. For the first time ever, us console players get to experience all the cool stuff modders create. Wondering how to install these mods?

Skyrim Menu

The mods are accessed on the main menu before you start or load a game. Click on Mods and it should load the mod store. Before you can actually view and download mods, you need a Bethesda.net account and login. If you have already done so in Fallout 4 then you are good to go, otherwise go here and create one: Bethesda.net account.

Now, follow these simple steps and start adding mods to your game. Be careful however, if you activate mods then achievements will be disabled. It might be wise to create a new game for playing with mods. When you load games you can identify save games that have mods enabled by the [M] in front of it or [Modded] behind the character name. The game will also warn you if mods are activated when you load a game or start a new game.

How to add mods

1. Select the Mods option on the game’s main menu and log into your account

2. Now you can start browsing the mods. You can search for a keyword or you can browse through specific categories which are displayed in a Netflix-styled environment. When you select a mod, you can then read its full description and start to download it or add it to your favorites for later use. Once you have downloaded all you want for now, continue to the next steps.

Enable/Disable the mods

Once downloaded, open the Load Order (Y on Xbox). Here you can see all the mods that are downloaded and you will be able to enable or disable them. You can also Delete them from here if you are done with the mod and want to clear up space. (this is an easy overview of all the mods downloaded)

Load order
Some mods may be dependent on other mods to work. If this is the case, you will want to change the load order to have the primary mods at the top.

Reorder Library Skyrim Mods

When you start mods and you have already downloaded mods you will be on the starting screen. Which shows you potential updates for each mods and your entire Mod library. Below this overview you will see the mod categories again.

Mod Limit

The Xbox One can support up to 5 Gigabytes of mods at the same time and the PS4 can support 1 Gigabyte. Additionally, modders for the Xbox One can include external assets while the PlayStation 4 is restricted to only using internal assets (stuff that is already present in the game).

A few points to keep in mind

  • Bethesda points out in its loading screen that mods are always at your own risk – if there are issues, you can always disable Mods by going back into the Mods menu.
  • You can also see what’s downloaded during game play on the Pause screen.
  • Achievements and Trophies are disabled while mods are active.

A Microsoft 365 consultant and a Xbox Ambassador, I got into gaming thanks to the Nintendo 8-Bit my parents got me when I was young. Enjoy the competitive play style of games like Smite and Overwatch and can get lost in RPG’s like Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect.
