With Avengers: Infinity War releasing soon, I am going back and watching all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in release order. Next up is Guardians of the Galaxy.

How Was Guardians of the Galaxy Perceived At Release?

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit. During the run up to the release, there was some skepticism about how this movie would do. The characters are not nearly as well known as the other heroes in the MCU, so it was a risk to make this movie. I remember seeing trailers for it and being intrigued by the movie. Being a Chris Pratt fan from his days on Parks and Recreation, I was excited to see him in this movie. The music used in the marketing was also a huge plus.

After seeing it in the theater, I had a new favorite MCU movie. It had everything: good action, great comedy, great music, and a fun cast. My only issue with the movie at the time was the villain. Lee Pace’s Ronan just didn’t work for me. He was too much of a generic villain, but luckily the rest of the cast made up for it.

How Does Guardians of the Galaxy Hold Up Now?

Star Lord and Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy

Not much has changed in how I feel about Guardians of the Galaxy. It is a fun ride. Chris Pratt is great as Star Lord and the rest of the guardians play well off of each other. The humor is awesome and is a turning point in the MCU. Many of the later films will take some inspiration from Guardians of the Galaxy and try to infuse some extra humor into the movie.

The way the guardians interact is great. The scene where they have to escape from the jail is so well done. The action and the humor are perfectly balanced. I laughed throughout the movie (at least when the guardians were on the screen). There is also some mystery surrounding Star Lord’s father, which is a thread that goes throughout the movie (and is a major point in the sequel).

Guardians of the Galaxy also pushes the cosmic side of the Marvel universe forward. We barely see Earth in the movie (only at the very beginning) and stay out in the Cosmos. We also get more information on Thanos and some of his motivations. Overall, this is one of my favorite MCU movies. It is a breath of fresh air into the superhero genre and will affect future movies in a mostly positive way.

How Does Guardians of the Galaxy Fit into Infinity War?

Guardians of the Galaxy is an important movie in the MCU as it pertains to Infinity War. It deals directly with Thanos and features another Infinity Stone. So, this movie has the most direct connection to Infinity War yet. We also get a scene with the Collector where he explains the origin and power of the Infinity Stones. We can see how powerful Thanos is perceived to be. He orders around Ronan and keeps moving things around according to his plan. Additionally, we get to see the Power Stone in action.

What do you think about Guardians of the Galaxy? How does it hold up now? Sound off in the comments.
