With Avengers: Infinity War releasing soon, I am going back and watching all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in release order. Next up is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
How Was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 At Release?
The first Guardians of the Galaxy was an instant hit and this movie had a lot to live up to. The team is already together, so they should start growing as a unit. There also can be less time focused on how they came together and more on the story. Sadly, this one didn’t live up to the hype as much as the original. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had the comedy of the first (and may have surpassed it), but the story was considered to be weaker.
Personally, I while I enjoy the second installment, it fell flat for me. The opening scene was hilarious with Groot dancing during the battle, but the story went downhill. I enjoyed a lot of the movie, but the story never really gripped me. I enjoyed the ‘B’ plot a lot more with Rocket and Yondu. The movie wasn’t bad, it just did not live up to the first one for me.
How Does Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Hold Up Now?
My opinion has not changed much during my rewatch. If anything, I like it a bit less than when I originally saw it. I really don’t like the Ego plot (even if his planet is beautiful) and it dragged the movie down. I still really enjoyed the interactions between the Guardians and the other characters in the movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is littered with great lines like Yondu’s “I’m Mary Poppins Y’all!”, which became an instant classic. The humor from the first movie is still there and may have actually been amplified, but it didn’t carry the movie as well. The scene where Baby Groot is trying to find Yondu’s fin had me laughing so hard I was almost crying. But overall the humor wasn’t enough to make it a great movie.
How Does Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Fit into Infinity War?
We don’t see any Infinity Stones (although the Power Stone is referenced), but two of the main characters are daughters of Thanos. If I had to guess, I say that they will factor into Infinity War pretty heavily. We also know from the trailers that the Guardians will pick up Thor and that will probably take them to Earth. Like with Doctor Strange, I am excited to see how the Guardians interact with the Avengers. There is the potential for some great laughs in the movie.
What did you think of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Did it live up to its predecessor? Sound off in the comments.
