With Avengers: Infinity War releasing this month, I am going back and watching all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in order of release. Next up is Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
How Was Captain America: The Winter Soldier Perceived At Release?
After Thor: The Dark World, Marvel needed a hit to keep moving the MCU forward, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier was that hit. This was a turning point for the MCU since SHIELD disbanded at the end of the movie. It had ramifications not only for future MCU films, but also ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of Shield. I really enjoyed Winter Soldier when it came out and thought it was a much better movie than the first Captain America. The action was better and the story had more weight. We also got introduced to Sam Wilson a.k.a. the Falcon. Overall, Winter Soldier made a big impact on the MCU (even beyond the movies) when it was released and ramped up Phase 2.
How Does Captain America: The Winter Soldier Hold Up Now?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier holds up very well. It is a great action movie and improves upon the aspects of the first film. Just as in Iron Man 3, we see some of the effects of The Avengers. Due to the invasion, Shield is under more pressure to deliver and keep the world safe. But, due to the decades-long infiltration of HYDRA, Shield ends up needing to disband.
There are also a lot of direct links to the first Captain America movie in that we see what happens to Bucky after he falls off the train. He becomes the Winter Soldier and is brainwashed to kill any target Hydra wants him to. He is the main antagonist of the movie (along with Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce) and the scene when he is unmasked is great. Steve has to hesitate and can’t believe what he is seeing; his best friend is alive after all of these years but needs help. I think it is fitting that Bucky survives the end of the movie and is in place to be a bigger role in later movies.
Overall, I think this is a great movie and the best of Phase 2 so far. Both the action and character building are great and set up future movies. We also get a good mid-credits scene with the introduction of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.
How Does Captain America: The Winter Soldier Fit into Infinity War?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier does not have any direct connections to Infinity War, but does set up the next few movies in the MCU.
