Microsoft Acquires New Studios

During today’s E3 Xbox briefing, Microsoft’s Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer announced that he and his team, have secured several new studios under the umbrella of Microsoft Studios.

“We are amplifying our investment in new worlds that will deepen your love for gaming on Xbox”

Undead Labs

The creators behind the State of Decay.  On March 22, 2018, they released State of Decay 2 which has been very well received with over 2 million players in it’s first 2 weeks of availability.

Playground Games

The studio behind the award winning Forza Horizon series including the upcoming Forza Horizon 4 and a currently unannounced open world project.

Ninja Theory

The creative minds behind Heavenly Sword, Enslaved : Odyssey to the West, DMC : Devil May Cry and most recently the critically acclaimed Hellblade : Senua’s Sacrifice.

Compulsion Games

The developers behind the upcoming We Happy Few, a new first person adventure game set to release on August 10, 2018

The Initiative

A new studio led by Darrel Gallagher, former Studio Head at Crystal Dynamics.  There currently is no information available on the game this studio is currently working on.

These talented studios join an already stellar group which includes 343 Industries(Halo), Turn 10(Forza Motorsport), Rare(Sea of Thieves), Mojang(Minecraft) and the Coalition(Gears of War).  With cancellations like Fable Legends and Scalebound and several high profile delays like Crackdown 3,  Microsoft has been struggling with maintaining a steady stream of quality first party experiences.  The addition of these studios has me very optimistic that we will see a change for the better.  What do you think, are excited for the future of Xbox first party games?  Let us know in the comments.
