On Tuesday, November 18, 2020, Crystal Dynamics announced that they would be showcasing Marvel’s Avengers’ first new hero, Kate Bishop, in a video premiering Thursday, November 19, 2020.
Avengers launched in early September to lukewarm critical reception, but despite that fact Crystal Dynamics continues to regularly update the game via patch fixes, hosting in-game events, and engaging with the community pretty regularly on social media. One of the biggest concerns that fans of the game have had about Avengers is its lack of diverse content and motivation to progress to greater power. With little known about what else a new hero could bring to the game, we’ll just have to wait to hear more from the developers on Thursday.
It’s also worth noting that it has been reported that Square Enix lost nearly $50 million after Avengers’ lackluster release. With the success they had in the previous quarter with Final Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix is still optimistic about turning Avengers around and having a great year in 2020 overall despite all of the challenges that have been presented.
Square Enix – reported Yen6.5bn loss for HD Games driven by Marvel Avengers, would not say how many sold but that volumes were 60% of plan. Implies game cost over $100m to make but only sold 3m or so. Ouch
