Far Cry 6 First Impressions

Articles Blogs Reviews

The newest installment of Ubisoft’s Far Cry series launched on 10/7/2021 in glorious Far Cry style. Far Cry 6 features the usual Far Cry antics, from an intimidating, evil antagonist, wacky makeshift weapons, to an inspiring if not unsuspecting hero. Far Cry 6 beings fans of the series more of what they love in a beautiful, tragic Caribbean setting.

Far Cry 6 follows the story of the protagonist Dani, a native of the fictional world of Yara. This country is ruled by a dictator named Anton Castillo, who is using slave labor and a heavy military presence to bring Yara back to the paradise it once was. Dani quickly finds herself among the Libertad, a group of freedom-fighting guerillas that are working together across the country. Dani’s mission is to free the country from Castillo’s rule and then immigrate to the United States.

Similar to the last few of its predecessors, Far Cry 6 features an array of animal companions to befriend and utilize as gamers trek across Yara. A gator, dog, rooster, and coyote round out the amigos that can be obtained along the way, each providing Dani with different skills to make their exploits easier one way or another. From brutal to low-kay, these animals add a fun dynamic to combat and missions.

While Far Cry games have flaunted wacky arsenals, Far Cry 6 raises the bar even more by adding a new feature called Supremos. These are akin to “supers” or “ultimates” one may find in games like Destiny 2 and Apex Legends. When a player has charged up their Supremo, they can rain havoc on the enemy, leap forward with an enhanced jump pad, or heal themselves quickly without skipping a beat, just to name a few. This is something that has not been seen in a Far Cry game before, and it has been executed very well between the types of Supremos, the quantity, and the ability to change between them effortlessly.

Ultimately, Far Cry 6 will scratch the itch of those gamers who enjoy this series. It takes pieces of each of its predecessors to make a fluid, well-rounded experience. Some may say that it’s too much like a Far Cry game, but I think for a Far Cry game, this is the best feedback it can receive. The world is vast, beautiful, and interactive, and if Far Cry is a series you’ve always enjoyed, there’s nothing that will stop you from enjoying this one.

Far Cry 6 can be played on PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Don’t forget, if you’re in the world of Yara to BLOW IT UP! and most importantly, Stay Rad.

I'm a thirty-something fangirl with a lot of feelings to share!
