Watch parties are becoming increasingly popular during this COVID pandemic. Several services already have watch party capabilities with Netflix party, metastream, Watch2gether, and even Twitch through Amazon Prime. Disney won’t be staying on the sideline as they plan on rolling out a new feature called GroupWatch that is rolling out today.
How does it work?
The new feature is similar to Netflix party, however, all users have to have their own individual accounts on Disney+. Each person will have to click on the icon under a title and send out a link, which can be shared with up to six other friends. It will only work on the Destiny+ website, Android, iPhone apps, and smart TVs. As a side note, if you start the watch party on your phone you can move over to a smart TV or PC by opening the app or website and tap on the group icon again to join.
The new feature does seem to be missing a few key features like chat which limits the watch party to using emojis. Each user also has the ability to pause, play, rewind, and fast forward for the group.
CNBC has a good walkthrough on how to set up your watch party.
Open Disney+ on your iPhone, Android phone or on Disney’s website.
Search for a movie or TV shows.
Tap the GroupWatch icon (an outline of three people) on the Details page of their chosen content.
Invite up to six people who also subscribe to Disney+.
They’ll receive an invite to join your party.
Once everyone has joined, start the movie or TV show you want to watch.
What do you think of this new feature? I know I will be using it to watch the Mandalorian with my friends!
