We had the privilege of being invited to the Cyberpunk 2077 Gamescom demonstration. This was a live, 50-minute walk through where we were introduced to nearly everything this game is going to offer upon release. We will try and get all our thoughts written down further along the article, it is safe to say we are hyped for this games release and can’t wait to play it. Creating your Cyberpunk
The demonstration started off by showing us the character customization screens. Not only do you get to customize a male or female, you also get to set their backgrounds to really flesh out the main character currently known as V, a Cyberpunk. During the demonstration, we got to see a glimpse of all the customization you can do ranging from different hairstyles to tattoos and body enhancements.
CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has stated that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a game with fluid classe. What this means, in general, is that there is no fixed class when you create your character. They have implemented a system where you can actually be whatever you want, from an intuitive hacker to the guns-blazing type. CDPR wants you to be in control of your character and play their game the way you want. Each playstyle has different consequences and outcomes during the missions of the game, and some decisions you get to make only appear to players who have unlocked certain skills.
The game is set in a wonderfully open, sprawling place called Night City, inhabited by many different types of characters with their own routines and stories. When they first stepped outside during the demonstration, we got a glimpse of this massive world CDPR has created and it just blew our minds. It really did look so alive and immersive, I know for a fact that people are going to get lost exploring the city’s rich environment. Staying on the main story quests can be hard in many RPGs, but trust me when I say it is going to be a bloody challenge in Cyberpunk 2077.
During the demonstration, we were exploring Night City driving a car at full speed. They only showed off one mission, but that mission lasted for a good 50 minutes. There was a lot of driving around. It gave me the feeling that Night City will be huge and will indeed have plenty to offer the explorer in you. The game is played in first person, but when you drive around you get to switch between first and third person, probably to make it a bit easier to drive around. Trust me, you do want to try out first person driving as the inside of the car is beautifully modeled.
The game is full of choices, from a simple conversation with a merchant to a meaningful discussion during a major quest. Every choice you make will actually have different consequences, and some of those will come into effect immediately after you make them. During the quest we were shown, there was a certain part of the game where you could either warn a gang of something on a disk or keep quiet, knowing full well what could happen. When they asked the audience what to do, all shouted to not warn the gang.
It set into motion an interesting series of events that saw the player having to fight their way out of the gang’s hideout. I wonder what would’ve happened had we decided to warn the gang. Would we find easy passage out of their hideout only to fall into the hands of the ones that set them up in the first place? We won’t know for a while, but this sure is going to add to the replayability of the game come launch.
Within the world of Cyberpunk 2077, it is quite normal for humans to modify themselves with enhanced cybernetics. We were introduced to this in the mission that was demonstrated, and we got to pick some mods before going after an objective. The choice made was for some form of new eye which could zoom in and scan objects. We also received an upgrade to the weapon system. This is going to be a big part of the Game as modifications to the human self is a big item in the world of Cyberpunk.
There are Ripper Doctors across the city that install the most exclusive and high-end modifications for a price. In the world of Cyberpunk 2077, you will encounter many modified humans. Some almost look like actual cyborgs and have lost all human appearance.
I left the CD Projekt Red presentation in awe of what they have created and showed us so far. I have no doubt that this game will break many records and surely be the Game of the Year. Cyberpunk 2077 feels like a new generation of RPG and will likely set a new standard within the genre, something to the effect of what Bioware has done in the past with games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. Speaking of which, I actually did get a sense of Mass Effect from the demonstration thanks to all the dialogue, decisions available to make, and the diverse combat system in place.
Furthermore, the world of Cyberpunk feels like that of Altered Carbon, for those who have watched the show on Netflix. It’s so rich in detail with the glowing neon facade of corporate advertising, a uniquely 80’s way of looking at the future. Click here to view the presentation.
A few days after the presentation and I’m still very much excited to see what CDPR has in store for us next. I hope they will release more information soon as to when we might expect this gem to be released!
