Code Vein Announcement Trailer – Dark Souls Meets Vampire Anime

News

The first trailer has dropped for Code Vein, a new take on the Dark Souls-like formula of action RPG.

Prepare to Dine

A few weeks ago, a short animated teaser was released showing Dark Souls-like gameplay and ending with the tag line: “Prepare to Dine.” This, of course, is a play on words referencing Dark Souls‘ motto of “Prepare to Die.” Fans of this genre like myself were instantly intrigued and wanted to know more.

Code Vein

We wouldn’t have to wait very long. A full length trailer dropped today and showcased in-game footage from the game now titled Code Vein. The game appears to take place post-modern apocalypse, where the human race as we know it has turned into some sort of blood-thirsty creatures called “The Lost.”  The city landscape looks semi-open world and has been taken over by the “Thorns of Judgement.”

Vampire Souls

The art style is very dark and anime, especially the characters’ faces. The world and game play look to take many cues from the Dark Souls series, with the environment looking much like Dark Souls 3‘s land of Lothric, but with modern buildings and roadways. The combat looks fast and frantic, much like Bloodborne, with characters constantly moving, attacking and dodge-rolling. What weapons we could see also appear to be very much in the vein of Bloodborne. The female character is carrying a rifle with a blade on the end and the male is wielding some sort of transforming sword. They are also teased to have vampire-like powers and abilities, which I’m sure will be varied and upgradable.

The two characters fight together throughout the trailer, although it is not made clear which one you will control or if the second character is an NPC or controlled by a second player. Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne made good use of a co-op system, so it would seem likely that a second playable character would be an option. The enemies shown look to be very fierce and unforgiving, as do the bosses that are shown. In true Souls fashion, the bosses are large and brutal, so be prepared to level up and “get good.” The game will be published by Bandai Namco and will release sometime in 2018.
