This year’s entry into the Call of Duty franchise has finally been revealed. After several games taking place in the present, near future, and far off into space, the series is being brought back to its roots in World War 2 with Call of Duty: WWII.
Call of Duty is going back to basics later this year with a new entry in the series set during the second World War. We got to see our first glimpse of the game earlier today via an Activision reveal stream. They showed a cinematic trailer for the story-driven campaign along with giving us a very small sneak peek at what’s to come in the game’s online multiplayer and co-op zombie modes. It has been almost ten years since the last Call of Duty game has been set in World War 2, and it seems fans are eager to jump back in.
What We Know About Call of Duty: WWII
The main story of the campaign will take place in the European theater of the war between 1944 and 1945. The player will take control of Private Red Daniels, a soldier in the United States Army 1st Infantry Division. The story will follow Red and the other soldiers in his unit as they land on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and push across Europe and into Germany. The campaign is supposed to be historically accurate and chronicle different events and battles that took place during that time. There will also be side missions apart from the main story where you see the war through the eyes of others, such as a mission where you play as a French woman during the liberation of Paris.
The majority of the main story though will focus on Red and his squad. The developers also made it clear that this isn’t a super hero’s tale like in previous Call of Duty games. Your health will not automatically regenerate and every bullet that hits you counts. If you get hurt, you will need to find a health pack or a medic to heal. This sounds like the more visceral, realistic Call of Duty that fans have been requesting for quite a while.
The Bread and Butter of COD – Multiplayer
Not much was revealed about how the multiplayer in Call of Duty: WWII will function. Many of the familiar game types like Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Kill Confirmed will most likely be included. A few new game types were also teased during the stream. War Mode will be a type of giant team battle, where it’s one faction versus the other in all-out warfare on a massive scale. Each battle will be narratively driven and each team will have certain objectives to complete to win the match.
Divisions is a new way to create, equip and level up your solider. Which division you choose will help determine your gear loadouts, class and multiplayer role. There will also be an in-game social space for the first time in the history of the series. Much like the tower in Destiny, this will be a place where you can meet up with other players and form teams for different missions, visit vendors to equip your solider, and possibly coordinate a dance party (probably not, we’ll let Destiny keep that one). Zombies will be making its return again this year. Not much was stated about this mode, except that it will be co-op and more story-driven than previous zombie modes. More details on this mode will be revealed at E3.
When Can I Have It?
Call of Duty: WWII is set to be released globally on November 3rd, 2017. There will be a private multiplayer beta some time later this year for those who pre-order the game, and most likely a public beta in the weeks following that. Pre-orders went live right after the stream. It’s available across many different storefronts including Gamestop where your pre-order bonus there gets you a nifty COD: WWII limited-edition hat.
