The latest game in the Call of Duty franchise has been announced and is titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Rumors about the title of this latest iteration in the 16-year-old franchise started circulating over the weekend, and today’s official announcement has confirmed the leaks. This year’s latest COD game is not to be confused with 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which seems to share both similar titles and some of the same cast of characters, as we saw a teaser of Modern Warfare’s Captain Price at the beginning of the trailer.
At the time of the rumors, news of the projected title began stirring debate about if this would be an official reboot of the Modern Warfare series, or possibly a continuation upon the existing Modern Warfare story. From what the trailer has shown us so far, we have no idea for certain.
What we do know, however, is that immediately after the trailer dropped, Business Wire released an article detailing some content players can expect in the game, as well as comments from Infinity Ward’s co-Studio Head, David Stohl on what their team has developed. From the official trailer and Business Wire’s article, the following is included:
- Returning Characters
- Updated graphics running on a new engine
- Single-Player story
- New Cooperative Gameplay
- Cross-play support with PC and consoles
- Eliminating the traditional season pass
- More free maps and content
- Post-launch events
The listed content above looks to be the classic deliverables we’ve come to expect from Call of Duty, with the addition of more free content, events, and cross-play, which seem like a direct response to Fortnite’s world-dominating strategy.
If all of this is true, and we consider Call of Duty’s latest push of their own mobile game, Call of Duty could be positioning themselves to become the absolute gaming juggernaut that I remember from my Middle School years.
