20XX Review – Procedural Rogue “Lite” Platformer

News Reviews

20XX, is a rogue-like action platformer by Batterystaple Games. Play as as either the gunner Nina or swordsman Ace as you work you way through its procedurally generated levels. Co-op play is also an option for you and a friend to take the fight to the game’s evil bosses. Fans of Mega Man will find themselves in very familiar surroundings.

Is RNG Your Friend?

The procedural nature of the game can really vary the difficulty of the levels with each play through. There were times that levels seemed incredibly easy and others where I felt like the game had just decided I had gone far enough, making the level incredibly difficult. Overall though, the game presents a fairly consistent game play experience. You will come across all manner of baddies, moving platforms, jumping puzzles and environmental hazards to work your way past in order to reach the boss.

Die to Progress

As in any rogue-like game, death will end your current play through and you will lose all progress made. However, as you play you will collect Soul Chips which can then be used to buy permanent upgrades, unlock items and buffs. The permanent upgrades can increase your life and energy meters, item unlocks will allow them to be found in chests hidden throughout levels and the buffs will allow you to start your next run with the item purchased.

Like A Boss

Each level will have a boss waiting to try an stop you in your tracks. Bosses have their own individual mechanics that will require precise timing and platforming skills to defeat. Bring the boss down and you will have the chance to use their formidable power moving forward.

20XX was very fun to play and brought back many memories of grinding my way through the platformers of the late 80s and early 90s. The controls are precise and easy to use. The music is fantastic and really draws you into that feeling of nostalgia. The procedural levels along with daily and weekly challenges provide a wealth of replayability. I would definitely recommend this game to any fans of the genre. 20XX is available on Xbox, PS4, Switch and PC for $16.99 CAD.
