About Justice League’s Batman

I don’t know about you, but I have been ready for the Justice League movie since the old cartoon series. Seeing some of the biggest DC characters on screen at the same time makes the little kid in me light up. But, some of you may not know a whole lot about these characters. So, we are here to give you a little bit of that information. Let’s get started!

If you ever have had a chance to sit with me and talk about superheroes, then there is a good chance that you have heard me talk all about the Dark Knight, Batman. Sure, a lot of people would claim Batman as their favorite character, and why not? He has all kinds of cool abilities, stories, a classic look, and he has been around for a long, long time. In fact, Batman first debuted in “Detective Comics #27” in 1939. So, he has been around the block a time or two. Let’s take a closer look at his abilities, his latest origin story, and what he is currently up to in the comics.

Powers, Abilities, and Gadgets

Obviously, Batman doesn’t have any inherent super powers. Instead, he relies on his detective skills, his knowledge, and his athletic abilities. Bruce Wayne has an inexhaustible amount of wealth, which gives him access to many cutting edge technologies. Combining technology with his abilities, Batman is able to stand with the greatest heroes in the DC Universe. Also, Batman has a strong willpower. He has the ability to function under great physical pain, and even withstand attacks on his mind.

A closer look at Batman also reveals his amazing stealth abilities. We have seen Batman break free from nearly inescapable deathtraps with little to no harm. As a master of disguise, Batman is also able to gather information quickly and easily, most of the time under the identity of Matches Malon, a notorious gangster persona that he has created. All of these abilities of his were gained because of his strong commitment to justice. When Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered, it changed his attitude. I would say that Batman’s commitment to justice is his greatest power.

But, Batman’s wealth of technology gives him just the edge he needs when he is in a dire situation. The Batarang, for instance, is always at the ready to disarm any threat. His near perfect accuracy with one has saved him, and others, more times than he can count. Add in his utility belt, which is packed full of equipment for the field, and you have a walking armory on the battlefield. Finally, the Batmobile is one of pop culture’s favorite vehicles. In 2011, DC redesigned the vehicle. It has been given heavier armor and new aesthetics to fit in with the Batman persona.

New 52 Origin Story

In the reset of the DC Universe, known as the New 52 relaunch, we discover that while other heroes are just beginning their career, Bruce Wayne has been Batman for about five years. Later on in the run, we get to a story arc known as “Zero Year” which redefines Batman’s origin story. In this story we see a young Bruce Wayne attempting to save Gotham City from the Red Hood gang. He begins as just some vigilante, but quickly discovers that he needs a more fearsome presence. He quickly comes to terms with the fact that he is losing against the gang. While in his mansion, he asks for guidance from his father. That is when a bat crashes through his window, giving him the idea that he will become a bat.

The New 52 universe begins with Batman having more experience than most of the other characters. During the Darkseid invasion, we are able to see Bruce interact with Green Lantern, Flash, Superman, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman for the first time. Though he is only human, the Batman brings a strategic aspect to the team, assisting in ways that the other members cannot.

Currently in the Comics

As of right now, Batman has a lot of things happening to him in the comics. Recently, he has proposed to one of his love interests, to many people’s dismay. I won’t spoil it here, but if you are interested, then go ahead and check out Batman Rebirth #24. But, you won’t find her answer until a few issues later. The arc I want to talk about is the “War of Jokes and Riddles” featuring two of Batman’s greatest enemies, Joker and Riddler. The two villains of Batman are currently in a bloody feud, forcing the other villains of Gotham to pick a side. This forces Batman to push himself to his limit to keep everyone out of harm’s way and handles the situation. Check out Batman Rebirth #25 through #32 if you want to see the entire story arc.

Like I stated before, Batman has always been my favorite superhero. When I was very young, my mom would let me stay up late for my dad to come home. While waiting, we would watch the Batman ’66 show with Adam West. My dad and I bonded over this a lot over the years. So, Batman has been an important part of my life for a long, long time. I can’t wait to see the entire Justice League on the big screen with my favorite superhero standing right alongside them. He is Vengeance, he is the Night, he is Batman!
