About Justice League’s Wonder Woman

I don’t know about you, but I have been ready for the Justice League movie since the old cartoon series. Seeing some of the biggest DC characters on screen at the same time makes the little kid in me light up. But, some of you may not know a whole lot about these characters. So, we are here to give you a little bit of that information. Let’s get started!

Let’s be honest with ourselves, Wonder Woman is the most popular heroine the world has ever seen. She has sold countless comics, t-shirts, dolls, and action figures because of her combination of brains, brawn, and beauty. Her first appearance was in “All-Star Comics #8” in 1941. Known to the world of man simply as Diana, Wonder Woman is the Amazonian princess. Being taught to fight at a young age has turned her into quite the expert warrior in both powers and weapons. Let’s take a closer look at her abilities, her latest origin story, and what she is currently up to in the comics.

Powers and Abilities

All of Diana’s abilities have been given to her by the Greek gods. Currently in Rebirth, we have seen a retcon explaining some of her powers. Her patrons, the gods, visit her during her first visit to man’s world. It is stated that their gifts will reveal themselves to her when she needs them. We quickly see her first gift, the gift of incredible strength, as she is able to rip off a cell door by accident. She then gains super speed, great durability, and even the power of flight!

Now, Wonder Woman has also been trained in combat. She is considered an elite martial warrior, with Batman giving her the highest praises. Her bracelets, known as the Bracelets of Submission, were formed from the remnants of the Aegis, the legendary shield of Athena. When she slams her bracelets together, she is able to create a concussive force that is even capable of making Superman’s ears bleed. Zeus, her father, has also explained that her bracelets keep her powers in check. It is rumored that if she were to remove the bracelets that her powers would be greatly increased. And, finally, she can even manifest a sword from each bracelet. Always being able to be armed is a huge advantage to a trained warrior.

Her most famous weapon, however, is definitely her Lasso of Truth. Also known as the Lasso of Hestia, it was forged by Hephaestus. Anyone who comes in contact with it is compelled to tell the absolute truth. Also, it is virtually indestructible.  She is highly skilled with the lasso, having great precision/accuracy with it. It has even been used as a whip by her.

New 52/Rebirth Origin Story

Wonder Woman has had trouble with her origin story lately. In the Rebirth series, we discover that she has memories of two different origins, but isn’t sure as to which is true and which is false. Her first memory is of her pre-Flashpoint origin. This origin is of her being made of clay, being sculpted by her mother, Queen Hippolyta. She was given life and powers by the Greek gods in this memory. However, her other memory is of her being a natural-born daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus. So, she is a demi-goddess instead of being made from magic. With both of these memories currently feeling real, Diana must try and find the truth. The early issues of Wonder Woman Rebirth focus on her separating truth from lies. Start at Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 if you would like to know more.

Currently in the Comics

As of right now in the comics, Wonder Woman is trying to answer one of the biggest questions in Rebirth. Who is her brother? She has found out that she has a twin brother, known as Jason, and has been taken somewhere far away from the sights of gods and men. The reason she needs to find out more about him and his whereabouts? Someone is targeting the children of Zeus, murdering them. If this sounds interesting to you, then go and pick up issue #31 of the Wonder Woman Rebirth run. The “Children of the Gods” storyline begins there, and it has been fun to read so far.

Wonder Woman has stood for so many different things over the years. She is an icon for women everywhere, and is a hero for everyone. We see her wanting peace, but is a trainer warrior. Diana is able to stand beside Batman and Superman without anyone questioning her position of power. And while we have already seen her stand with Superman and Batman, it will be even more exciting to see her with Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg as well. The Princess of Themyscira will keep the boys in line during the Justice League movie. Besides, “None of them have ever known a woman like her.”
